Windows not installing updates? COMPUTER BILD shows how to exclude sources of error and repair Windows Update.

You are watching : How to fix Windows Vista update

“When installing problems occurred with some updates”: If Windows shows this message, good advice is expensive. Because very different problems can disrupt the sensitive update function of the operating system. If, for example, security patches are not applied, the computer is acutely endangered due to open security gaps. And if a major function update fails, many improvements and bug fixes are missing. COMPUTER BILD shows how to eliminate sources of error and repair Windows Update.

Solution 1: Windows troubleshooting

For sporadic update problems – as is so often the case – a Windows reboot. Because usually it is only due to a previous update, which can be completed by restarting. However, if Windows repeatedly fails to install certain updates or an Error code appears, damaged or missing installation packages are often responsible. In this case it helps to empty the cache for overwritten updates. Windows will then download the missing updates again and set them up.

There are several ways to empty the “Update Cache”. The simplest is via Windows’ own troubleshooting. You can find out how to use it to track down and fix update problems below. If error messages continue to hail, other programs, outdated drivers or devices may be interfering with the update process. Therefore, also note the following solutions.

  1. Press to open the Windows settings. There you click on .
  2. Then click on in the menu on the left, on if necessary and then on .
  3. After clicking on , Windows checks the Update function and fixes any detected errors. If Windows prompts you to install upcoming updates, confirm this.
  4. Click on .
  5. You should then have Windows and restart the update service. To do this, press , type in the command shutdown /g and click on .
  6. After the restart, open the Windows settings as in step 1. If the available updates have not yet started downloading and installing, click or if necessary.
  • Press to open the Windows settings to open.
  • Click on , then in the menu on the right on , if necessary on and then on “Windows Update”.
  • Then Windows checks the update function and corrects any detected errors. If Windows prompts you to install upcoming updates, confirm this.
  • Click on .
  • You should then have Windows and restart the update service. To do this, press , type in the command shutdown /g and click on .
  • After the restart, open the Windows settings as in step 1 and click on windows update. If download and installation of the available updates have not yet started, click on or .

Sometimes the cause is brutally banal: If a computer’s storage space is running low, it has Windows no longer has the option to save overwritten updates. Therefore, next, check whether there is enough disk space:

  1. To do this, click in the taskbar and click in the new window. The note on drive “C:” should show at least “32 GB free”.
  2. If this is not the case, throw unnecessary ballast overboard. To do this, click on in the start menu, then on and
  3. Next click on and at the bottom on (Windows 10) or on (Windows 11).
  4. Try the update again. If this is not enough, you must uninstall programs and/or swap out personal files before you try again.

Solution 3: Install updates manually

What many people don’t know: Windows Update is not the only source for official Windows -Updates. If the Windows update function does not automatically deliver a specific package, it may work manually. Because if you know the “KB number” of the desired update, you can also load each update via the Microsoft Update Catalog< /span> down. He then receives a single Windows Installer package file with the extension *.msi – which can be started with a double-click. How it works:

  1. Press the shortcut and select (Windows 11) or (Windows 10). If necessary, Windows displays the failed update directly in the “Update status” area. Then make a note of the KB number (“Knowledge Base”) displayed in brackets.
  2. If the failed update does not appear here, click on or . You will then see a list of further updates. If the note “Error during installation” or “Last failed installation attempt” appears there, you’ve found what you’re looking for. Write down the KB number in the brackets or use .
  3. Press the shortcut key to copy it. In the next window you will see which Windows version (Windows 11 or 10) and which system type (32 or 64 bit) you have. Make a note of this and close the window.
  4. Load the Microsoft Update Catalog. After clicking on , type in the KB number or press and confirm by clicking on .
  5. The update catalog then lists suitable downloads. If necessary, select “cumulative update” for your Windows version and system type – x64 stands for 64-bit, x86 for 32-bit. If versions for “Client” and “Server” are offered, select “Client”. Once the appropriate update has been found, click on .
  6. In the next window, click on the appropriate download link, download the update and start it.
  7. If this installation also fails, there are several options. If available, repeat the process with the so-called “delta update”. These update variants are significantly smaller than cumulative updates because they only contain the changes compared to the previous month and not – like cumulative updates – all previous updates.
  8. Does it also work with the delta Update not, check whether there is already a successor package for said update. To do this, click on the title of the failed update in step 3.
  9. In the following window, click on . If successors are already available for the update, they appear in the following list. Make a note of the KB numbers in the brackets.
  10. After clicking on repeat these instructions from step 2 with the KB numbers noted.

on a new Windows version. If this installation process aborts, there are usually simple reasons behind it – such as disruptive virus scanners or outdated programs that are not compatible with the new Windows version. Solution: Before updating, get the latest version of the software from the manufacturer. Then you uninstall the old virus protection, for example, carry out the function update (Windows upgrade) and then install the fresh virus protection in the new Windows. It is best to use the official

feature update to uninstall the virus scanner. It is usually not a simple update, but a much larger one to a new Windows version. It is best to use the manufacturer’s official Removal Tool to uninstall the virus scanner.

USB hard drives or removable media connected to the PC or notebook may also interfere with a system upgrade if they mess up the boot sequence of the system drives expected by the upgrade process. Therefore, remove as many USB drives from the computer as possible before each function update. This also applies to memory cards, since these are also addressed via the USB interface.

Outdated device drivers often cause problems. The easiest way is to delete the corresponding devices, carry out the function update and then let the new Windows set up the drivers again:

  1. Tap Enter devices in the start menu and click on .
  2. If unknown devices appear in the Windows device manager – i.e. entries with a question mark – click on them right-click on it and select .
  3. Don’t worry: the system will automatically reinstall the devices after the upgrade – with a bit of luck the new Windows version will then recognize them correctly and set them up without question mark.

Before upgrading, check the manufacturer’s website for the latest drivers for your PC and install them. A little patience is required, because new versions are often only available a while after the release of a fresh Windows version. In addition to simple drivers, the PC manufacturer sometimes offers a device-specific BIOS or firmware update that enables the smooth upgrade of an older operating system. You should therefore install this software before upgrading to a new Windows version.

Solution 8: Repair Windows Update

Are you still getting error messages? Does the update stop permanently – or is it constantly being rolled back? In these cases, you need to bring out the heavier artillery and fix the update function. To do this, carry out the following steps:

  1. Load the COMPUTER BILD mini-program Repair Windows Update.bat. If the browser blocks the download, click if necessary.
  2. Click in the taskbar and click in the quick access panel, then right-click the file and click in the list. If the SmartScreen Filter blocks the action, click and .
  3. Confirm by clicking and after the prompt appears, press any key. When the message “Completed successfully” appears, press any key again to close the program. Now try the update again. If the repair did not help, you must repair certain Windows components.
  4. To do this, load the COMPUTER BILD mini-program Repair System Files.bat.
  5. Start the program as in steps 2 and 3. The repair process takes considerably longer. Wait for it to finish. After that the problem should be fixed.

Windows Update: Error codes and their meaning

Function updates often simply fail because a “preparatory” Windows update has not yet been installed. In this case, the error message “Error: The update is not available for your computer” appears and the missing patch must be installed in advance – for example via the Microsoft Update Catalog (see solution 3). In addition to a lack of storage space (solution 2), many problems can also be traced back to missing System requirements. In the event of problems, the operating system issues specific error codes that are mostly incomprehensible to laypeople. Here are the most common codes and what they mean:

  • 0xC1900101: This is usually a driver error. See solutions 4, 6 and 7.
  • 0xC1900208: Incompatible software is blocking the upgrade process. Uninstall all unneeded Win32 programs and virus scanners, see Solution 4.
  • 0xC1900107: A pending cleanup from a previous installation attempt must yet to be completed. Restart Windows and repeat the process. If the problem occurs again, perform a Disk Cleanup using Windows.
  • 0x80073712: A corrupted or missing system file is interfering with the upgrade. In this case, type in the Windows search, right-click it and select and . You type the command, press Enter and repeat the process.
  • 0xC1900200, 0xC1900202, 0x80300024: The PC may meet the Minimum Requirements of the new version of Windows.
  • 0x800F0923: A driver or software is incompatible with the Windows 10 upgrade. See Solution 4.
  • 0x80200056: An accidental reboot or user logout has interrupted the upgrade. Repeat the process and make sure the PC stays on.
  • 0x800F0922: The PC cannot connect to the update server produce. Most common causes: using a VPN connection and insufficient storage space. Make sure you have an unencrypted internet connection and enough space on the system partition and try the upgrade again.
  • 0x80070070: There is not enough to install the upgrade disk space available. Free up disk space and try again (Solution 2).
  • 0x80070002: The specified file was not found. Remove any disks you do not want Windows installed on and try again (Solution 5).
  • 0xC1900101: A driver has a problem caused. Uninstall third-party antivirus and anti-spyware programs (Solution 4). Disconnect all connected devices except mouse, keyboard and monitor (Solution 5). Install the latest drivers from the PC or device manufacturer (Solution 7).
  • 0x8007042B: Windows Setup ended unexpectedly because a other process was running in the background. Close all programs and try again.
  • 0x800700B7: Windows Setup ended unexpectedly, because another process was running in the background. Uninstall all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and try again (Solution 4).
  • 0x800f0831: This problem occurs when there is no access insists on Microsoft Update or system files are missing. Install the update manually (Solution 3). If that doesn’t help, you need to repair Windows Update (Solution 8).
